Diesel fuel prices in Russia by year

72,02 ₽/l, 2025 +5,81 to 2024

This represents the average annual price per liter of diesel fuel in Russia, derived from Rosstat's weekly observations. While diesel was cheaper than gasoline for decades, it has recently surpassed AI-95: demand from freight transport and agriculture remains steady year-round, and winter-grade fuel carries a seasonal premium.

The annual value is the average of all weekly observations for the year. Incomplete years are excluded: a threshold of 45 weeks excludes years with fewer observations to prevent partial-year averages from being compared directly to full years.

Prices are national averages. Winter diesel is more expensive than summer diesel, with more pronounced differences in northern regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current price of diesel in Russia?

The latest value in the table is the annual average price per liter. Rosstat publishes current weekly prices separately; these are typically higher than the annual average if the year is still ongoing.

Why is diesel more expensive than gasoline?

There are two reasons. Diesel demand is stable year-round, driven by trucks, buses, and agricultural machinery rather than just private vehicles. Additionally, winter grades are more expensive to produce, as paraffin content is reduced to prevent the fuel from thickening in freezing temperatures.

Has diesel always been more expensive?

No. For a long time, diesel was cheaper than gasoline. The shift occurred before the start of this series: by 2022, a liter of diesel was nearly four rubles more expensive than AI-95, and by 2025, the gap grew to over five rubles. Comparisons can be made on the gasoline prices page.
