What to keep in mind
- Values before 1996 are three-digit not by mistake: in 1992, prices increased twenty-sixfold, and this is the same indicator as today's single-digit percentages.
- Inflation is a weighted average across the entire consumer basket. A specific good may rise in price three times faster than the average or become cheaper.
Questions
What is inflation in Russia now?
The latest value in the table above. Until the end of the year, this is a cumulative figure from January, not the year-end result: the indicator is calculated as an accumulating total compared to December of the previous year.
Why is official inflation lower than what receipts suggest?
The index is calculated based on a basket of hundreds of goods and services with weights reflecting the spending structure of the entire population. Each person's personal basket is unique, and if it includes items that rise in price faster than the average, the perceived inflation may differ from the official figure.
How does inflation differ from the consumer price index?
They are the same thing expressed differently. Rosstat publishes the index: 107.4 means prices rose by 7.4 percent. Inflation is the index minus one hundred.
