Chart series with 1998 years. Full values, including earlier ones, are in the table below

The Rosstat series begins in 1997, but the price is in old rubles—2,329 rubles per liter: a 1,000-to-1 denomination occurred in 1998. Therefore, the table and chart start from 1998; otherwise, the entire modern history would be flattened into a line at zero.

The price is a national average: gasoline is more expensive in the Far East and cheaper in oil-producing regions. The spread between the most and least expensive regions is typically around ten rubles.

Rosstat publishes prices monthly; the table shows annual values, so the current year may differ from today's pump prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gasoline cost in Russia now?

The latest value in the table is the average annual price per liter of AI-92 in the country. AI-95 gasoline is approximately five rubles more expensive, and diesel fuel is comparable to AI-95.

Why are gasoline prices rising if Russia produces oil?

Oil itself accounts for a small portion of the price per liter of gasoline. More than half consists of taxes: excise tax, mineral extraction tax (MET), and VAT. Therefore, pump prices are loosely linked to global oil prices and rise along with taxes, inflation, and refining costs.

Has gasoline ever been cheaper than the previous year?

On average per year, almost never; the series trends upward. The only notable exceptions are 2001 and 2008, when the average annual price was slightly lower than the previous year.

Why does the figure differ from the price at the gas station?

The table shows the average for the entire year and the entire country. A specific gas station in a specific month may be several rubles more expensive, especially in remote regions.
