Retail trade turnover per capita by year

381 779 rub. per year, 2024 +52 620 to 2023

Retail trade turnover per capita shows how much money, on average, one resident of the country spends on goods per year. The indicator is calculated by dividing total retail turnover by the population, so it does not reflect how spending is distributed among individuals, but is convenient for comparing regions and years.

The series is presented in current prices, so its growth is driven by two factors: people buying more and prices rising. To separate these effects, the indicator is compared with inflation for the same period.

There are two dips in the series, both visible without adjustment: 2009 after the global crisis and 2015, when real incomes fell for the second consecutive year. In all other years, the indicator grows.

Since 2023, Rosstat has calculated the indicator excluding data from the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does one resident of Russia spend on purchases?

According to Rosstat data for 2024, retail trade turnover amounted to 381,779 rubles per person per year, or about 31.8 thousand rubles per month. This is the national average: it includes food, appliances, clothing, and purchases by visitors.

What is included in retail trade turnover?

Sale of goods to the population for personal consumption: shops, markets, online trade, and fuel sales at gas stations. Services, including catering, are not included in this indicator and are accounted for separately.

Why is the per capita figure higher than the spending of an average family?

Turnover is divided by the entire population, including children and the elderly, and purchases are recorded in full, including large one-time expenses and purchases by visitors. The average value is always higher than the typical one because it is pulled up by expensive purchases made by a minority.
