Retail trade turnover in Russia in 2025 amounted to 62.3 trillion roubles. In 2000, it was 2.35 trillion, meaning that over 25 years it increased 26.5-fold in nominal terms. Rosstat data, all sales channels including markets and individual entrepreneurs.

The nominal series grows almost monotonically because it includes inflation. More interesting are the points where growth stalls. In 2009, turnover increased by just 4.7% amid 8.8% inflation, meaning people actually bought less. A similar situation occurred in 2015–2016: growth of 4.4% and 2.6% respectively against inflation of 12.9% and 5.4%. And in 2020, when growth was 0.7% compared with 4.9% inflation.

How much is that in real terms

Consumer prices have risen by about 10.8 times since 2000. Retail trade turnover over the same period has increased by 26.5 times. This means that the physical volume of purchases has increased by about 2.5 times.

The figure looks more modest than the 26.5 times headline, but this is the honest answer to the question "are people buying more?" Yes, by about two and a half times, and the rest is accounted for by prices.

The growth can be broken down by year by comparing this chart with the consumer price indices: years where the nominal turnover growth is below inflation are years of real decline.

Retail trade by region

In absolute terms, the picture is predictable and is determined by the population.

The Central District alone accounts for a third of all Russian retail trade, and Moscow accounts for almost an eighth. At the other extreme are the Nenets Autonomous District with 15.6 billion rubles and Chukotka with 20.2 billion: this is less than the turnover of a single large Moscow shopping centre in a year.

Per capita turnover

Absolute figures mean little until they are divided by the number of people. This reveals unexpected leaders.

The gap between Moscow and Ingushetia is fivefold. Across Russia, retail purchases averaged 381,779 RUB per person in 2024, or about 31.8 thousand RUB per month.

Sakhalin and Yamal ranked high due to high northern wages and small populations. Krasnodar Krai, in turn, is boosted by the tourist influx: millions of visitors spend money there in summer, yet they are not counted in the denominator.
