Ranking regions by population size shows the position of each constituent entity within the country's overall structure. Ninety-four rows list federal districts as well as individual oblasts, republics, and krais. Comparison is conducted in two ways: the region's position among all constituent entities of Russia and its position within a specific federal district. The data is presented as a cross-section without time-series context
Distribution of RF constituent entities by population size rank among all entities and by federal districts
Rosstat data. Series: 94, indicators: 2. Breakdown by: Central Federal District; Belgorod Oblast; Bryansk Oblast; Vladimir Oblast; Voronezh Oblast and others
Five highest values: Nenets Autonomous Okrug (85), Republic of Karelia (69), Kostroma Oblast (67), Oryol Oblast (64), Komi Republic (60). The gap between the highest and lowest is 85 times. The top five account for 32.6% of the total for all positions
A region's position in the list depends on the selected column, as the scale of comparison changes. One column includes all constituent entities of the country, while another includes only those within a single federal district. This helps determine whether a region is a major demographic center at the national level or holds a leading position only within its district
