Migration increase of Russia's population by year

61,9 thousand persons, 2022 −505,8 to 2021

Difference between the number of people who arrived in Russia and those who left it in a year, in thousands of persons. Moves between regions within the country are not included: they change regional populations but not the country's. Together with natural increase, migration determines whether the population grows or declines.

Since the early 2010s natural increase in Russia has been negative almost every year, and the total population is maintained or falls depending on migration: when inflow offsets outflow, the population grows.

Data for 2011–2021 are taken from the Demographic Yearbook of Russia: there the migration increase was recalculated after the 2020 census. In Rosstat’s summary table “Components of population change” these years remained unadjusted and are noticeably lower, so rows from the two tables for these years are not mixed.

There are no values for 2014: that year Crimea and Sevastopol were incorporated into the accounts, and Rosstat does not provide annual changes. Data from 2022 onward are given without accounting for the DPR, LPR, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is migration increase of the population?

It is the difference between the number of people who arrived in the country for permanent residence and the number who left it in a year. If arrivals exceed departures, the increase is positive; if departures exceed arrivals, it is a migration decline.

How does migration increase differ from natural increase?

Natural increase is the difference between births and deaths. Migration increase is the difference between arrivals and departures. The sum of the two gives the total population change for the year.

Are moves between regions taken into account?

No. Relocation from one region to another changes the populations of those regions but not the country's total population, so it is not included in Russia's migration increase.
