The difference between the number of births and deaths per year, in thousands of people. A negative value indicates natural decline: more deaths than births. Migration into and out of the country is not included; it is accounted for in migration growth.
Population size changes due to two reasons: natural movement (births and deaths) and migration. In years with small declines, migrant inflow can offset it, and the population grows even with negative natural growth.
The dips in 2020–2021 are related to a spike in mortality during the pandemic, rather than a decline in the birth rate.
There are no values for 2014 in the Rosstat table: in that year, the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol were included in the count, and annual changes are not provided.
