Industrial production in Russia in 2026: results for January–August
For January–August 2026 industrial production in Russia remained exactly at the level of the previous year: Rosstat index 100.0% compared with January–August 2025. Growth has ended. In 2025 industry grew by 1.1%, in 2024 by 5.1%. Within the almost zero overall result the sectors diverged: medicines, aircraft and batteries are produced noticeably more, while metallurgy, oil refining and building materials fell. Below we examine monthly dynamics, sectors and regions. All figures are taken from Rosstat datasets on roschart.ru, each chart has an interactive version.
Industrial production index by year
The index shows how many times the output in physical terms (tonnes, units, kilowatt-hours) has changed relative to the previous year. Prices are not included, so inflation does not inflate it. 100% means "the same as a year ago".
| Year | Index, % to previous year |
|---|---|
| 2015 | 100.2 |
| 2016 | 101.8 |
| 2017 | 103.7 |
| 2018 | 103.5 |
| 2019 | 103.4 |
| 2020 | 97.9 |
| 2021 | 106.3 |
| 2022 | 100.7 |
| 2023 | 104.3 |
| 2024 | 105.1 |
| 2025 | 101.3 |
Over eleven years industry fell once, in 2020, by 2.1%. It was followed by 2021 with the strongest growth in the series, 6.3%. Then almost zero 2022 and two fast years in a row. In 2025 the pace slowed to 1.3%, and in the latest Rosstat release, where sector weights are recalculated according to the 2023 structure, the 2025 result is refined to 101.1%.
The series from 2015 by months and regions is available in the dataset "Industrial production index in Russia and by subjects".
Industry in 2026 by month
Rosstat compares each month with the same month of the previous year. Over the first eight months of 2026, four fell below last year's level:
| Month 2026 | % to the same month 2025 | Since the start of the year, cumulative |
|---|---|---|
| January | 99.2 | 99.2 |
| February | 98.9 | 99.1 |
| March | 101.3 | 99.9 |
| April | 101.3 | 100.2 |
| May | 98.6 | 99.9 |
| June | 100.7 | 100.0 |
| July | 100.4 | 100.1 |
| August | 99.4 | 100.0 |
The year started with a negative, spring recovered it, May dropped the total below zero again, and summer brought it back to 100%. There are no deep declines: the weakest month, May, was minus 1.4%. But there were also no months with growth above one and a half percent in 2026. By comparison, in December 2025 output was 3.5% higher than a year earlier.
The chart shows what has changed. In 2025 processing industries were above 100% for almost the whole year and lifted industry upward, while mining was negative for most of the year. In 2026 processing started the year with two months at 97.0%, mining fell below last year's level again from April, and there was no one to pull the total up. Monthly figures for the country and regions are available in the dataset "Industrial Production Index in Russia".
Why January always "drops"
If you compare a month not with the previous year but with the preceding month, January looks disastrous: in 2026 output was 75.5% of December's, in 2025 it was 78.8%. This is typical seasonality. In December enterprises close annual plans and fulfill orders; in January there are long holidays. Therefore, to assess the year, the comparison is made with the same month of the previous year, not with the adjacent month.
Which sectors are growing and which are falling
Rosstat's industry consists of four large types of activity. The results for 2026 are:
- manufacturing: 100.4% for January–August;
- provision of electricity, gas and steam: 100.5%;
- mining of mineral resources: 99.1% for January–July;
- water supply, drainage and waste disposal: 98.0% for January–August.
Energy started the year with a growth of 7.1% in January, but by summer it turned negative: July 96.0%, August 98.8%. Therefore its total for eight months is almost zero.
The most interesting picture appears at the level of individual productions. In the table for 131 types of activity for January–July 2026 the spread is huge:
The fastest‑growing output is aircraft: 151.5% compared to the previous year. Pharmaceutical products are 14.0% higher, batteries 11.4%, vegetable oils and fats 8.0%, automobiles 6.3%. Computers, electronics and optics added 4.2%.
At the opposite pole are heavy industry and everything related to construction. Steel pipes are 22.9% less, locomotives and wagons 18.2%, oil products 9.2%. Metallurgy overall gave 93.6%, cement, lime and gypsum 93.1%, building ceramic materials 80.9%. The food industry is almost unchanged: 100.7%.
The index for oil and gas extraction is missing in the publication: Rosstat leaves these cells empty. The overall extraction total (99.1%) is accounted for, but the separate contribution of oil cannot be seen. The whole sector table is available in the dataset "Production indices by individual types of economic activity".
Industrial production by region
Rosstat gave the result for January–August 2026 for 85 regions (excluding DPR, LPR, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts). Growth was shown by 47, decline by 38. Range from minus 26.6% to plus 24.1%.
Leaders: Amur Oblast (124.1%), Republic of Tyva (117.1%), Kaliningrad Oblast (113.6%), Kursk Oblast (111.1%), Zabaykalsky Krai (110.9%). Moscow added 8.4%, Saint Petersburg 6.5%.
The biggest drop was in Astrakhan Oblast: 73.4% of the previous year level. Crimea and Sevastopol lost 14.2% each, Krasnodar Krai 12.5%, Leningrad Oblast 10.8%.
By federal districts the picture is as follows:
| Federal district | Jan–Aug 2026, % to 2025 |
|---|---|
| Far Eastern | 107.0 |
| Central | 104.7 |
| Volga | 101.8 |
| Northwestern | 101.1 |
| Siberian | 99.4 |
| Ural | 98.1 |
| North Caucasian | 97.1 |
| Southern | 89.8 |
The Far East and the centre are growing, the south of the country fell by more than a tenth. The Ural district, where the extraction of Tyumen Oblast and Yugra is concentrated, went into negative following extraction: Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug gave 96.0%, and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug 104.5%.
Values for each region over several years are convenient to view in the regional rating by industrial production index, and for a single region, for example the Amur Oblast, there is its own page. Monthly data for 2026 for all subjects are in the set “Industrial production index in Russia and regions”.
How Rosstat Calculates the Industrial Production Index
Rosstat takes the output of representative goods in physical units, compares it with the same period of the previous year, and aggregates them into sector indices. Sectors are combined into a overall index with weights according to their share in gross value added. The base year for the weights is currently 2023. When the base is changed, Rosstat recalculates past years, so the 2025 result differs in two releases: 101.3% and 101.1%.
The index includes four types of activity: mining, processing, energy and water supply with waste disposal. Construction and agriculture are not included.
