The 'divorce rate' often mentioned in the news is usually calculated as the number of divorces per thousand marriages in the same year. This is a ratio of two different flows: most divorces involve couples who married years or decades earlier; therefore, if the number of marriages drops sharply, the 'rate' increases even if the number of divorces does not.
Until 1995, data in the table is provided every five years; thereafter, it is provided annually.
