Urban population of Russia by year

Population of cities and urban-type settlements as of 1 January. A settlement is classified as urban by a regional authority decision, not by size or appearance: an urban-type settlement with two thousand residents is counted as a city.

The series changes not only because of migration and births: reclassifying an urban-type settlement as a rural locality instantly moves thousands of people from one category to another.

The share of urban population in Russia has stayed around three‑quarters for several decades, although the absolute number fluctuates.

Years 2001–2004 and 2006–2009 are absent: the original Rosstat table uses a five‑year step up to 2010.
