How many people aged 15 to 72 were employed. Data from the labour force survey: a person is counted as employed if they worked at least one hour per week for pay or in their own business, including informal employment.
This is not the number of people with formal contracts: the survey asks individuals, so self‑employed, side jobs and informal work are also counted.
The series reacts weakly to crises: in Russia downturns are more often reflected by lower wages and reduced hours rather than by layoffs.
Employment levels are limited by demographics: the working‑age population is shrinking, capping possible growth.
