Hospital bed stock of medical organizations at year‑end — the number of places for 24‑hour patient stay in the country. Day hospitals are not included.
A reduction of almost one third over twenty years — result of shifting part of treatment to day hospitals and outpatient care, as well as hospital consolidation.
In 2020 the reduction halted: additional places were created due to COVID.
The number of beds does not equal availability of hospital care: more patients treated per bed per year because hospital stays shortened.
