Language proficiency and language use by the population of the Republic of Crimea
1844648 residents of the Republic of Crimea reported language proficiency in the 2020 All‑Russian Population Census. This statistical snapshot shows which languages people know and which they use in everyday communication. The table has 147 rows, each devoted to a separate language or language group, allowing the region’s linguistic diversity to be seen. Data are split between urban and rural populations to assess how actively different languages are spread in these settlement types

One can compare the number of persons proficient in a specific language with the number who use it in daily life. Columns also show figures separately for urban and rural populations, revealing differences in language practice between city and countryside residents and allowing comparison of total speakers with active everyday users

The information was obtained during the 2020 All‑Russian Population Census and is published in volume five of the results, dedicated to national composition and language proficiency. It is intended for linguists, sociologists and anyone studying the ethno‑cultural situation in the Republic of Crimea. The data are presented as a final snapshot without year‑by‑year dynamics, thus reflecting the linguistic picture at the time of the census. No updates are planned as the figures pertain to a completed statistical observation
How it is calculated
Census results on ethnic composition and languages are used in planning the school teaching of native languages, assessing the need for translation of public services, and in ethnographic research
