Morbidity in Russia by Year: Full Statistics and Charts

In 2024, Russia registered 119 986,6 thousand diseases with a diagnosis established for the first time in life. This is 821,1 cases per 1,000 people compared with 730,5 in 2000. The overall morbidity increased by 12 percent over 24 years, but by disease classes the dynamics diverged radically: circulatory system diseases increased by 2,3 times, infectious diseases fell by almost half.

Below is the full series by year, breakdown by 16 disease classes, and interactive charts.

The curve is almost flat until 2019, then a dip in 2020 and a sharp rise in 2021–2022. The dip is explained by the fact that in 2020 scheduled appointments were halted, and some diagnoses simply were not made. The rise of the next two years includes both accumulated untreated cases and COVID itself, which in the statistics falls under the respiratory diseases class.

By 2023 the indicator returned to about 820 cases per thousand and has stayed there for the second year.

What is growing the fastest

Disease classes with the greatest increase over 24 years, cases per 1,000 people:

Disease class20002024Growth
Diseases of the circulatory system17.138.72.26 times
Endocrine diseases and metabolic disorders8.516.61.95 times
Neoplasms8.412.01.43 times
Diseases of the respiratory organs317.2401.91.27 times
Ear diseases21.925.01.14 times
Disease classes where cases are increasingly recorded, per 1,000 people
Disease classes where cases are increasingly recorded, per 1,000 people

Diseases of the circulatory system have grown more than any other class. Part of the increase is explained by population aging, part by improved detection: screening diagnoses a person who would not have gone to a doctor on their own.

Endocrine diseases, which include diabetes and obesity, have almost doubled. This class is growing steadily, without setbacks, and the COVID year 2020 declined less in it than in other classes.

What is decreasing

Disease class20002024Change
Infectious and parasitic diseases44.324.5minus 45%
Eye diseases31.926.7minus 16%
Skin diseases44.038.2minus 13%
Diseases of the digestive organs32.328.6minus 11%
Nervous system diseases15.314.6minus 5%
Disease classes where cases have decreased, per 1,000 people
Disease classes where cases have decreased, per 1,000 people

Infectious and parasitic diseases show the strongest decline in the whole table. The decrease was continuous since 2000 and accelerated in 2020, when anti-epidemic measures reduced the transmission of ordinary infections as well. The minimum occurred in 2020, 20.3 cases per thousand. Afterwards there was a slow rebound to 24.5 in 2024, but the class never reached the 2019 level (26.4).

The most prevalent class

Diseases of the respiratory organs account for almost half of all primary morbidity: 401.9 cases per 1,000 people out of 821.1. In absolute numbers this is 58.7 million cases in 2024.

It is this class that determines the shape of the overall curve. The surge of 2021–2022 is almost entirely explained by respiratory diagnoses, including COVID and its consequences.

Questions and Answers

How many diseases are registered in Russia per year?

For 2024 there were 119,986.6 thousand cases with a diagnosis established for the first time in life. This is primary morbidity; repeat visits for an already established diagnosis are not included.

Is morbidity increasing in Russia?

Over 24 years the overall indicator rose from 730.5 to 821.1 cases per 1,000 people, that is by 12 percent. But the curve has been falling for the last two years from the 2022 peak.

Which disease is the most common?

Diseases of the respiratory organs, 401.9 cases per 1,000 people in 2024. That is almost half of all primary diagnoses.

Why did morbidity drop in 2020?

Not because people were less ill. In 2020 scheduled appointments and dispensary examinations were curtailed, and some diagnoses were not made in time. The indicator reflects registration, not the actual health of the population.

What does “primary morbidity” mean?

The number of cases when a diagnosis is made for a person for the first time in life. Separately Rosstat tracks total morbidity, which includes previously identified diseases, and the numbers there are noticeably higher.

Is morbidity related to the number of doctors?

Indirectly: case detection depends on the accessibility of medical care. The dynamics of the number of doctors is discussed in the material number of doctors in Russia by year.

In Brief

Primary morbidity in Russia over 24 years rose from 730.5 to 821.1 cases per 1,000 people. Within this almost flat line two opposite processes are observed: infectious diseases fell by almost half, while cardiovascular and endocrine diseases increased by 2.3 and 2.0 times respectively. The 2022 peak was COVID‑related, and by 2024 the indicator returned to a level of about 820 cases.
