How many museums, theaters, and libraries are there in Russia: statistics by year
· Культура
At the end of 2024, there were 3,216 museums, 728 professional theaters, 40.7 thousand public libraries, 34 zoos, and 64 circuses operating in Russia. Museums received 142.4 million visits, theaters had 42.8 million spectators, and libraries served 53.4 million readers. All three indicators for museums and theaters are record highs in the entire history of Rosstat observations. At the same time, circuses and libraries have been losing their audience for twenty consecutive years.
Below is a table for all types of institutions, an analysis of who is growing and who is shrinking, and interactive charts.

A summary table with all years is available in the "Main Cultural Indicators" dataset.
Museums: a quarter-century of uninterrupted growth
The number of museums in the country has increased by half since 2000 and nearly doubled since 1995, when there were 1,725. There is not a single year of decline in the series.
Attendance grew faster than the number of museums, meaning people began visiting more often rather than simply having more locations available. In 2000, there were 499 visits per thousand inhabitants; by 2024, there were 975. Practically every resident of the country visits a museum once a year, and this is an average across all ages.
The Covid slump of 2020 is more visible here than anywhere else in cultural statistics: 128.7 million visits in 2019, 59.0 million in 2020, a drop of more than twice in a single year. The recovery took three years, but 2023 and 2024 set two records in a row. You can view the year-by-year series on the dataset page.
Theaters: more stages and more spectators
The number of theaters has reached 728 compared to 547 in 2000, with 42.8 million spectators compared to 30.8 million. In terms of per thousand inhabitants, this is an increase from 210 to 293 spectators.
An interesting detail of the series: between 2000 and 2010, the number of theaters grew by 57, while the number of spectators barely increased (30.8 versus 31.0 million). The entire growth in the audience occurred in recent years, with the majority of it taking place in 2022 and 2023, when nearly 6 million spectators were added over two years.
Circuses: minus three quarters of the audience
The sharpest decline in cultural statistics. There are almost as many circus buildings as there were (64 versus 62 in 2000), but five times fewer spectators: 2.2 million in 2024 versus 11.3 million in 2010 and 8.6 million in 2000. There are 15 spectators per thousand inhabitants versus 79 in 2010.
Part of the decline is explained by the abandonment of animal acts and a change in format, and part by general competition for the weekend evening. Zoos, which cater to the same audience with children, have grown during this time: 15.1 million visits versus 6.4 million in 2000.
Libraries: the network is shrinking, there are fewer and fewer readers
In 1990, there were 62.6 thousand libraries, in 2000 there were 51.2, and in 2024 there are 40.7 thousand. About 22 thousand locations have disappeared, and almost all of them are rural: cities lost 12 thousand libraries over thirty-four years, and villages lost 10 thousand, but there were twice as many in villages to begin with.
The number of readers is also decreasing, but much more slowly than the network: 59.6 million in 2000, 53.4 million in 2024. That is, there are more people per remaining library than before. The library collection has decreased from 1,027 to 880 million copies. The series since 1927 shows that the current level is comparable to the beginning of the 1950s.
Questions and answers
How many museums are there in Russia?
3,216 at the end of 2024. Rosstat counts independent museums and their branches, so there are even more physical exhibition sites. The number has been growing every year since 1995.
How many people go to museums?
142.4 million visits in 2024, or 975 per thousand inhabitants. One person can go several times, so these are visits, not visitors.
How many theaters are there in Russia?
728 professional theaters, including drama, musical, children's, and puppet theaters. This is a historical maximum in the Rosstat series.
Why have there been fewer libraries?
The network has been shrinking since the early 1990s, and the main reason is optimization in small villages: a library is merged with a community center or a school, and the separate unit disappears from reporting. However, the number of readers lost is much smaller than the number of locations.
