In 2025, Russia recorded 128,793 road traffic accidents. In 2015, there were 184,000, meaning the number of accidents decreased by 30% over ten years. The number of injuries fell by 31% (159,889 compared to 231,197), and road traffic accident mortality dropped from 12.4 to 9.9 per 100,000 population. The series can be divided into three segments. From 2015 to 2019, there was a slow decline of about 3% per year. In 2020, there was a sharp drop of 16%: the lockdown removed a significant portion of traffic from the roads. Since 2021, the indicator has plateaued at around 130 thousand and fluctuates within 5%. It is important to note that after the lifting of restrictions, the series did not return to its previous values. The difference between 2019 and 2025 is 35.6 thousand accidents per year, and this is no longer an effect of the lockdown.
Injured and dead
The number of injured almost parallels the number of accidents: 231,197 people in 2015, 159,889 in 2025.
In 2015, there were 126 injured per 100 road traffic accidents, and 124 in 2025. The ratio has changed little, meaning the severity of the average accident has remained the same, while their total number has decreased.

The gap between the worst and best districts is almost twofold and has persisted throughout the observation period. The Far East ranked first in fatality rates in 2018 as well (16.02), with the North-West ranking last (10.93).
The explanation lies in the structure of the road network. Where the share of intercity highways is higher and the distance to the nearest hospital is longer, the share of fatal outcomes is higher for the same number of accidents. The number of drunk-driving accidents has decreased by a third, and this is exactly the same rate as the overall decline in accidents. In other words, the share of drunk-driving RTAs in the total number has barely changed: 8.3% in 2015 and 7.9% in 2025.
However, the fatality rate in this category is significantly higher than the average. In 2025, 3,081 fatalities occurred in 10,197 accidents caused by intoxicated drivers, meaning 30 deaths per 100 such RTAs. Across all accidents, the ratio is roughly 11 per 100.

A direct comparison of absolute figures is not very meaningful: Germany has more accidents than Russia despite having a population 1.7 times smaller. The difference lies in the accounting methodology: Germany records any incident with injuries, including minor ones, and traffic density there is significantly higher.
A meaningful comparison can be made in terms of fatalities. With a rate of 9.9 per 100,000 population, Russia remains significantly higher than Western European countries, where the typical value ranges from 3 to 6.
