Russian production over twelve years grew from 506 to 535 million tons, that is, by 5.7%. The peak of the series was in 2019: 561 million tons. The drop in 2020 (513 million tons) was due to the production limitation agreement, after which the indicator was recovering for two years. Why Russia's share in the world is declining
Russia's share in global oil production: 12.8% in 2010, 12.4% in 2022. The difference is small, but behind these two close numbers lies completely different dynamics among its neighbors in the table.
Over the same twelve years, the US increased production from 327 to 754 million tons, i.e., by 2.3 times. This is the result of the development of shale deposits: in 2010, the Americans produced a third less than Russia, in 2022, 41% more. Saudi Arabia increased from 461 to 580 million tons. Global production grew from 3,960 to 4,329 million tons, i.e., by 9.3%.
Russia is holding its volume, while the market around it is growing. Hence the slow slide in share despite seemingly stable figures.

The gas series behaves differently than the oil one. The peak occurred in 2021: 763 billion cubic meters, the best result for the entire observation period. Then came two consecutive years of decline: 676 in 2022 and 638 in 2023. The result of 2023 is 2% below the 2010 level.
In 2010, Russia and the US produced approximately equal amounts: 651 and 605 billion cubic meters, with Russian production being 7.5% higher. In 2023, American production exceeded Russian by 436 billion cubic meters, i.e., by 68%. Russia's share in global gas production dropped from 19.8% to 15.4%. What the difference between oil and gas means
Oil is sold by tankers and, in this sense, is not tied to a specific buyer. Gas, excluding liquefied gas, flows through pipelines, and a pipeline is built for a specific market for decades. Therefore, oil production in Russia after 2022 has remained at its previous level, while gas production fell by 125 billion cubic meters over two years: pipeline volumes cannot be redirected quickly.
The difference is also visible in global figures. Global gas production in 2022–2023 barely grew: 4,109 and 4,132 billion cubic meters, an increase of 23 billion over the year. At the same time, US production grew by 45 billion over the same year. The global total remained flat because growth in one country offset the decline in another.
