Language proficiency and language use by the population of the Russian Federation
The 2020 All-Russia Population Census answered the question of how many Russians are proficient in a given language and how often they use it in everyday life. The data are broken down by urban and rural populations, allowing comparison of language habits between city dwellers and rural residents. The table contains 376 rows, each corresponding to a separate language or language group from Abaza to Yakut, including Russian, providing a comprehensive overview of the country’s linguistic landscape

Comparing these figures for urban and rural areas reveals where a language is actively spoken and where its use is limited to passive proficiency. The table is based on census data, so it reflects the linguistic situation as of 2020 and does not account for subsequent changes
