Language proficiency and language use of the population: Republic of Tatarstan
The 2020 All-Russian Population Census recorded the number of Tatarstan residents proficient in various languages and the number of those who use them in daily life. Table rows are categorized by language, from most to least common, while columns distinguish between urban and rural populations. For each language, the data provides the total number of proficient speakers and the number of those who speak the language at home, broken down by urban and rural areas

How to read this table
The table columns present two distinct data types for each language: the total number of proficient speakers followed by the number of those who use the language in daily life. The former figure is always higher than the latter, as language proficiency does not necessarily imply active use at home or in daily life. To avoid misinterpretation, rows should only be compared within the same column for a single language

Period and application
The 2020 Census results provide a snapshot of the linguistic situation in the Republic of Tatarstan. No new data for these indicators will be available until the next census cycle, as data collection occurs every ten years. This information is relevant to linguists, demographers, and those interested in the ethnocultural composition of the region's population
How it is calculated
Census results on ethnic composition and languages are used in planning the school teaching of native languages, assessing the need for translation of public services, and in ethnographic research
