Within each row, the total group population can be compared to the number of native language speakers. Differences between rows show the scale of each ethnic community and the distribution of language preferences: the proportion of the population maintaining a traditional language versus those who have transitioned to Russian. Comparing these indicators helps assess the preservation of linguistic heritage among the region's various indigenous peoples

The data are published in Volume 5 of the All-Russian Population Census results, dedicated to ethnic composition and language proficiency.
