More than five hundred eighty thousand people lived in Kostroma Oblast at the time of the 2020 All-Russian Population Census, and here one can see how this number is distributed by ethnic groups. The statistics fully reflect the results of a large-scale state population survey, recording the distribution of people by ethnicity, taking into account sex and type of settlement at the specific historical moment of the census

Census results on ethnic composition and languages are used for planning the school teaching of native languages, assessing the need for translation of public services, and in ethnographic research
