Shares of cereals, industrial, and other agricultural crops in the total sown area are presented as a time series from 1996 to 2024. The table rows are divided into three categories: total sown area, cereals and legumes, and industrial crops. Indicators are expressed as a percentage of the total sown area, showing the share of each plant group within the total land resources. The data are annual and cover the entire country

How to read this table

Comparing crop groups is facilitated by their share as a percentage of the total area. The table contains eleven rows, including cereals and legumes as well as industrial crops. This allows for an assessment of how the balance between different crop types has changed over nearly thirty years. Since the sum of all crop shares equals 100 percent of the total sown area, changes in one group inevitably affect the shares of the others

What is visible in these numbers

Highest values: Total sown area (100), Potatoes (67.2), Grain and leguminous crops (25.7). The gap between the highest and lowest is 71.4 times. The top three account for 73.6% of the total across all items — the distribution is heavily skewed toward the top

Observations are annual, with 29 observation periods in the dataset. There are 319 values in the table out of 319 possible, which is 100% — almost no empty cells remain

Period and application

The statistics cover the period from 1996 to 2024 and are updated annually. Information on the structure of sown areas in Russia is useful for farmers, agricultural market specialists, and economists studying land use. Rosstat data allow for tracking long-term trends in the distribution of agricultural land by crop type

Source notes: Data for 2007–2017 are adjusted to reflect the results of the 2016 All-Russia Agricultural Census. Data exclude statistical information for the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), Zaporozhye and Kherson regions
