In 2022, there were 11931 specially protected natural areas in the country. The list contains 96 rows providing data for all of Russia, federal districts, and individual constituent entities, such as Belgorod Oblast. The indicators cover all levels of protection, including 1006 local significance protected areas. These figures allow for an assessment of the scale of the protected area fund by administrative division

The table rows allow for comparison of the scale of protected zones at different management levels. One can correlate the total number of areas in a specific constituent entity with federal district data or see the share of local significance objects within the regional protection structure. For analysis, it is sufficient to compare the total values for Russia with the indicators of the region of interest

Period and application
The information is current as of 2022 and reflects the state of the natural fund during that period. The data was collected by Rosstat to monitor the environmental situation and the distribution of protected lands. The data will be useful to ecologists, government officials, and all those involved in natural resource management at federal and regional levels
How it is calculated
Data on emissions, discharges, and waste are used in the preparation of environmental reports, assessment of the burden on the territory, and selection of sites for production
